South African star AB De Villiers would lead his side as expected. The South African team is planning to show up really strong this time at the ICC Champions Trophy to be held this June. Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj is all set for his ODI debut tour after being included in the 15-man squad for ICC Champions Trophy.
The South Africans will battle head on with England in an ODI series starting May 24 before the beginning of ICC Champions Trophy Tournament. They have their first match of the tournament on 3rd June against Sri Lanka at London.
Keshav Maharaj test debuted against Australia past November at Perth and claimed 26 wickets at an average of 25.88 in 7 matches. He also bowled for a record-breaking innings in which he claimed 6-40 against New Zealand last month in Wellington. Keshav had a very good test series so far with 2 five wicket hauls. Keeping these performances of him in mind, he got selected in the ODI squad, while seamers such as Dane Paterson and Tabraiz Shamsi, were dropped out the squad that performed against New Zealand before their test series, in which South Africa won 3-2.
Spinner Keshav Maharaj would join another great talented spinner named Imran Tahir in the Final Squad. Imran Tahir is currently the number 1 bowler in the ICC Rankings for T20i’s as well as ODIs, is definitely the best spinner and best bowler in the squad. He would definitely be included no matter any injury keeping in the mind the damage he can cause to the opposing side.
On the other side, the pacer, Morne Morkel is also confirmed in the squad, after being out of form since the past 10 months. He would add value to the squad and would definitely turn out to be a star performer. Morne Morkel was out of form and injured due to a back injury that kept him out since last November. Nevertheless, he got selected for 3 tests against New Zealand and fetched Eleven wickets as South Africa won with 1-0. This performance gave selectors a good and a valid reason to select him for the ICC Champions Trophy along with Andile Phehlukwayo, Wayne Parnell, and Dwayne Pretorius, along with Chris Morris in an overall stronger Seam attack.
Dale Steyn, on the other hand, is said to be not included in the ICC Champions Trophy 15-men squad due to a shoulder injury that he suffered in the First Test played against Australia last November. Dale Steyn suffered a broken bone in his right shoulder during that test match against Australia. He is, however, got included in the 16-men squad known as the South Africa A that would compete against England in June.
South Africa are the Number 1 team right now in the ICC Rankings after they were able to win 14 matches out of a total of 16 matches. This includes a 3-2 series win against the kiwis’- New Zealand previous month and a record breaking 3-2 series triumph over the Kangaroos- Australia past October.
